The Princess of Wales's Yearly Christmas Service of Carols Honours Community Volunteers
Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her customary Christmas carol concert at the historic Abbey, with a congregation comprising members of the royal family, famous faces, and community champions who have made a difference in their neighbourhoods.
The 1,600 guests will hear a mix of traditional hymns, orchestral pieces, and literary excerpts from performers including Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
Focusing on Kindness and Compassion
The theme of the event, held in the glowing Westminster Abbey on Friday afternoon, is compassion and demonstrating care for others.
Attending the event are a couple named the Cordiners, whose young girl was lost to a brain tumour, and who set up a charity, a charity called Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to aid parents with a youngster facing a life-limiting condition.
"The time, care and compassion you give, often discreetly and without words, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an extraordinary difference to the circumstances of individuals," Her Royal Highness stated in a letter ahead of the concert.
A Steady Comeback
The royal has been undertaking her own steady comeback to official duties after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, in November making her major oration since 2023, in which she reflected on recognising the "quiet, often invisible work of caring".
Performance and Potential
Those coming to the Abbey will enjoy performances from talented youth performers supported by the charitable trust Future Talent, established in part by the late Duchess of Kent to broaden opportunities for musical tuition.
Trumpeter Carys Wood, 18, who plays the trumpet and is from Pembrokeshire, has been assisted by the charity, with funding assisting with instruments, tuition, and transportation expenses - and she said it was "amazing" to be taking part in the concert.
"Musical pursuits are frequently pricey," Carys said. She is now studying at the Royal Academy of Music, and added that "everyone should have the opportunity" to develop their musical skills.
A Family Affair
Her younger sibling Eliza, aged 11, who plays the euphonium, will also be at the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many important people," she said.
Attending the service will be representatives of different generations.
That will feature Saphia Turner, aged nine, honouree of a prize for youthful altruism, who produces drawings and undertakes charity feats to collect donations for local food charities.
Festive Decor and Performances
The Abbey has been festooned with custom-created holiday decorations, with well-known chef Mary Berry and flower expert Simon Lycett helping to make them.
Among the musical performers will be recording artist Katie Melua, the Westminster Abbey choristers and a nautical singing ensemble, Fisherman's Friends, who said the invitation to sing was "the perfect culmination."
The festive event titled 'Together at Christmas' will be aired by ITV1 on Christmas Eve.
