In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Address Youth Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.
"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was signed.
The September revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Terms of the New Electoral Partnership
According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Broader Government Consultations Underway
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of leading political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.
After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
