Right-leaning reactions to the limited release of files related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while others expressed frustration over how extensive censorship cast former President Trump and GOP members in a negative light.
Administration Defends Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole
Administration officials justified the redactions with intense exaggerated language. “At no point in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been so transparent with the public about such a delicate legal matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo outlining the redaction procedure.
Questions Raised by Redactions
While Trump's identity and image are visible in portions of the materials, the extensive black blocks prompt serious questions about the information may be hidden behind them. A number of Republicans swiftly demanded increased openness.
“The public are furious and disengaging,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the censorship break the statute, and implied that a future legislature may move to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump grossly fails to comply with both the intent and the wording of the act,” he added.
A Faction of Rightwing Figures Swing Behind the Release
But, some conservative commentators and former President loyalists swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—originating from a DOJ run by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of pages that are completely censored, and many of the individuals shown in pictures have their identities obscured.
Yet a few do not, including prominent individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, allowed some rightwing figures to go on the attack.
“This is quite ironic how the Democrats falsely accused Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil documents that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“New documents reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a woman that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one explanation Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Former President Campaign Releases Statement
Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has not been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration has not been concealing those documents for an extended period only to dump them late on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“The release is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from what they will try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photos as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement concluded.
Broader Conservative Commentary Seems Subdued
However, broader comment on the political right was relatively muted following the release, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for transparency that came before the legislative approval to pass a bill mandating the files' publication.
Loomer, who not long ago secured press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest advocates for a full release. In February, she criticized the Justice Department generally and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing influencers were given hard-copy folders of files that contained no new information.
